Sulphuric acid is a strong corrosive mineral acid with molecular formula H2SO4. It is a colourless, odourless, and syrupy liquid that is soluble in water, in a reaction that is highly exothermic.
Its corrosiveness can be mainly ascribed to its strong acidic nature, and if at a high concentration its dehydrating and oxidizing properties. It is also hygroscopic, readily absorbing water vapour from the air. Upon contact, sulphuric acid can cause severe chemical burns and even secondary thermal burns; it is very dangerous even at moderate concentrations.
The main use of sulphuric acid is in the production of phosphate fertilizers. It is used to manufacture other acids, dyes, glue, wood preservatives, and automobile batteries. Sulphuric acid can also be used for purification of petroleum, the pickling of metal, copper smelting, electroplating, metal work, and the production of rayon and film.
