Sodium bicarbonate commonly known as baking soda or bicarbonate of soda, is a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3. It is a salt composed of sodium ions and bicarbonate ions. Sodium bicarbonate is a white solid that is crystalline but often appears as a fine powder. It has a slightly salty, alkaline taste resembling that of washing soda.

Synthetic Sodium bicarbonate is produced from a chemical reaction between sodium carbonate and carbon dioxide in a controlled environment. Sodium carbonate is mixed with carbon dioxide, which produces sodium bicarbonate and water. The resulting sodium bicarbonate is then purified and dried.
