Smelting flux is a substance added to the ore to promote fluidity, remove impurities as slag, and sometimes to control the viscosity of the molten material. Fluxes react with impurities in the ore, forming a slag that is lighter than the molten metal and can be easily separated. Fluxes help to lower the melting point of the slag, making it more fluid and easier to remove from the molten metal. For example in gold smelting fluxes are used to speed up the selective oxidation process, making the separation of slag from precious metals quicker and more efficient.
