Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC) also known as alkyldimethyl benzylammonium chloride or Zephiran by trade name is a colourless to a pale yellow cationic surfactant organic salt classified as a quaternary ammonium compound mainly used as a biocide, cationic surfactant, and a phase transfer agent.

Benzalkonium chloride is used as is a liquid antiseptic and disinfectant used in various applications, including wound care, surface disinfection, and as a preservative in medications. It’s commonly found in products like hand sanitizers, antiseptic wipes, and eye drops. Benzalkonium chloride has demonstrated persistent antimicrobial activity for up to 4 hours after contact while ethanol based sanitizer demonstrates skin protection for only 10 minutes post application.

As a biocide, Benzalkonium chloride is used as a cleaning agent for a roof tiles, swimming pools, masonry, etc.
