Benzalkonium chloride also known as alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride or Zephiran by trade name is a colourless to a pale yellow cationic surfactant organic salt classified as a quaternary ammonium compound mainly used as a biocide, cationic surfactant, and a phase transfer agent.

As a biocide, Benzalkonium chloride is used as an Algaecide for clearing Algae, moss, lichens from paths, roof tiles, swimming pools, masonry, etc.

For skin protection, Benzalkonium chloride has demonstrated persistent antimicrobial activity for up to four hours after contact whereas ethanol-based sanitizer demonstrates skin protection for only 10 minutes post-application.

In beekeeping Benzalkonium chloride is used for the treatment of rotten diseases of the brood.
