The Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) grade PS1000 (coal based is commonly used to adsorb natural organic compounds, taste and odour compounds, and synthetic organic chemicals such as chlorine, halides and odours in drinking water treatment.

Activated carbon is an effective adsorbent because it is a highly porous material and provides a large surface area to which contaminants may adsorb. PAC is not commonly used in a dedicated vessel, owing to the high head loss that would occur. PAC is generally added directly to other process units, such as raw water intakes, rapid mix basins, clarifiers, and gravity filters.
