Hydrofluoric acid is a highly corrosive, acidic colourless solution. The principal use of Hydrofluoric acid is in organofluorine chemistry. Many organofluorine compounds are prepared using HF as the fluorine source, including Teflon, fluoropolymers, fluorocarbons, refrigerants such as freon and many pharmaceuticals contain fluorine. Hydrofluoric acid is also used in ceramic dental etching, rust stain remover, Car wheel cleaner, macerations toa extract organic fossils from silicate rocks and for dissolving rock samples.
